Overview

After the Frankenlair shuts down, Oliver relocates to Los Angeles for what a university bulletin dryly calls “creative reasons.” The apartment he settles into fits the persona he's built ever since—reclusive, private, no interviews, no recent photos. It's quiet in the way a place gets quiet when someone has spent years deliberately not talking about what happened to them.

The living room holds a couch and worn carpet Oliver paces when he can't sit still. The bedroom holds a closet he avoids “like a wound he refused to touch”—stacked with manuscript boxes full of drafts he'll never publish, and, further back, a plain shoebox he hasn't opened in years.

What's Inside the Closet

Behind the manuscript boxes: two weathered notebooks, one in Oliver's own cramped handwriting, one in Lucy's steady script that unravels near the end. Beneath them, a small rectangular device—compact, cold, its speaker grille pitted with scratches and its LED row dulled to gray. The early warning system, silent for years, until it isn't.

Role in the Series

This is where Megan's search for answers finally connects—the apartment Oliver retreats to after her first call, and the place he can't quite finish avoiding once she won't stop calling back. Opening that shoebox is the moment Book 2 truly starts moving: the device chirps once, a single LED flickers red, and the years Oliver spent pretending it was over end in a single mechanical sound.

Willow lives here with him through all of it—until Book 3, when the apartment appears one more time, briefly and unnervingly still: papers overturned, a phone ringing on a cluttered table, a doorbell going unanswered, and Willow crying into a silence where Oliver had been standing only a moment before.
